• Upgrades consisted of:
  • Terminate new cable between Jan Mayen base and sensor site, approx 900 meter long, installed by station personnel in July 2017.
  • Install cable conduit last 50 meter (thick-walled water tube 32mm dia), to prevent Met station dogs from damaging cable.
  • Extend internet connection to sensor site, using pair of Westermo mod DDW-142 Ethernet Extenders that uses ordinary copper pair for transmission.
  • Install new GPS antenna.
  • Install new digitizer, Nanometrics model Centaur, 6 channel version, attached to two different sensors: Broadband seismometer model Trillium 120PA Vault, and accelerometer model Titan, both manufactured by Nanometrics.
• Outer layer of sensor plywood boxes, made in 1984, are worn and in parts show signs of deteriation. We consider cladding them with thin Aluminum plates, of alloy 5754 which has high corrosion resistance, with spacing for ventilation.
• These Aluminum plates can be delivered with additional surface treatment, even painted to desired color (which is NCS "S 0580-Y").
• The GPS antenna (for timestamping digitizer data) mounted on top of wooden pole was covered with ventilated plastic "dome" in Nov 2017. Credit Jan Mayen station personnel for this work - see last five photos.
  We have now (2018) started using GPS antenna designed for marine use, which is much better for harsh climate conditions: Mfr: SANAV - San Jose Technology, Inc. model number GA-88P.
