INTRODUCTION


University of Bergen, Department of Earth Science, participates in UNIS Carbon Capture & Storage project (read background information).

Drilling of CO2 injection well is now complete. In the next stage, two perpendicular seismic lines will be shot using detonating cord as source, with geophone sensor layout both on the surface and within the injection well itself (VSP). After that, well testing will commence using water as fluid medium in order to determine flow properties etc. The seismic geophones will then be employed in passive listening mode, monitoring any micro seismicity or hydro-fractures related to the injection. The VSP geophones have to be moved to neighbouring well.

The surface data is gathered by 96 geophone strings in two 1.5 km long perpendicular layouts with common midpoints - i.e. a cross seen from above. The VSP uses three geophones at various depths.

The seismic program is a cooperative effort between these parties:

  1. VSP will be performed by Read Well Services.
  2. Dept. of Earth Science will provide 96-channel snow streamer with associated data recording equipment, and seismic source control system.
  3. NORSAR will perform data processing and analysis.

Measurement program commences approx. 25 January 2010.

The CO2 injection well is located in the vicinity of Dammyra, as shown on map below. The surface seismic monitoring system - in this case a snow streamer - will be placed in a cross pattern centered on well position.
