BACKGROUND


  • GFJ-294 and UNIS AG-205: Marine geophysics field course 1999
  • Type: Marine seismic survey, using a 120 channel streamer. Magnetometer data will also be collected.
  • Duration: September 16, 1999 to October 2, 1999.
  • Survey area: West of Spitzbergen. Port of call is Longyearbyen.

NOTES (FOR STUDENTS)


  • Tickets!
  • Schedule: The cruise consists of three legs. Students on a leg are split in two groups (thus, groups are denoted 1 to 6) according to watch duty, see below:
    • Leg 1: September 17 to 22
    • Leg 2. September 22 to 28
    • Leg 3: September 28 to October 2
  • Watch duty arrangements during shooting:
    • Students: 6 hours on, 6 hours off.
    • Group 1,3,5: Duty: 6-12, 18-24, meal: 7:30, 12:00, 17:30.
    • Group 2,4,6: Duty: 12-18, 24-6, meal: 11:30, 18:00.
    • Wake up next group.
    • 2 students seismic observers, 2 students seismic processing, 1-2 students navigation. Change job during acquisition (after ca. 24h).
  • Security regulations. During deployment/recovery of seismic equipment: watch from distance. Except first deployment during leg I; stay away.
  • When problems ask or wake up:
    • Air-guns/streamer: Helge
    • Recording: Ole
    • On-line proc.: Øistein.
  • Follow orders from cruise leader or other IFJ employees. The weakest link in the chain determines the data quality; don't let that be you.
  • Temperatures: -5 deg, windy. Bring warm clothes that might get dirty, rain coat. Bring in-door shoes. Be optimistic: bring sun-glasses. Do not bring rucksack.
  • Spare time: videos, small training room. Bring a book, playing cards.
  • Do and don't:
    • No alcohol allowed.
    • Do not lock cabin while sleeping.
    • Bring, and take (all of you!) pills against seasickness. Sick people will not be brought onshore.
    • Beds onboard have sheets, you will get a towel.
    • You will pay nothing.
  • Longyearbyen:
    • Do not walk outside Longyearbyen area without firearms - polar bears!
    • Shopping is duty-free.
  • After cruise: Excercise, compulsory. Process the profile your group acquired to a stacked seismic section. Time: 11-29 October. Do you want to process or interpret parts of the data as your Master thesis?
  • Total costs: approx NOK 1 million. Sponsors: UoB, UNIS, NPD, Norsk Hydro.
