Aim of meeting

  • Let representatives from central IT dept. present current UiB policies regarding application servers.
  • Discuss data storage/backup issues.


High speed data network makes server location irrelevant

Future 1 - 10 GBit/s high-speed campus data network will permit fast transfer of data files. For application servers placed in central IT locations, IFG concern that network represents bottleneck in transfer or loading of huge seismic (and to a lesser degree, seismology related) datasets may thus be ungrounded. In fact, when loading data from e.g. tape at IFG location, it would be local tape reading device that limits data transfer speed.

There should already exist a fibre-optic link terminated in IFG locations. Provided there are cable pairs available (one cable for each direction) in this link, it should be a minor issue to start using the link. If there are no free pairs a new fibre optic cable must be layed; cost and which department to bear the cost is not clear at the moment.

Seismology machines.

Seismology group runs Norwegian National Seismic Network (NNSN) where data from approx. 30 field stations are collected, analyzed, presented and stored. In the future there will be a move from event based data collection to a mode where data are streamed continuously to IFG server, representing 3 GByte and 1 TByte dayly and yearly storage need, respectively.

The Seismology group can continue to administer their own machines. Servers can be placed at IFG or central IT locations. Centralized data storage and backup should be considered.

Possible new seismic application server

It's possible for IFG to administer a new seismic application server, but centralized server administration should be considered; also centralized data storage/backup is recommended. If server is to be administered centrally, both Sun/Solaris and Intel/Linux platforms are supported.

Linux remote administered client system

Many programs on our list of current unix software can be included in the Linux remote administered client system. Software packages that require detailed knowledge of installation and configuration is set up by local experts on special purpose computers; following completion, the installation is simply extracted for packaging, and then included in the client distribution. This may apply to GMT (Generic Mapping Tools) and Seismic Unix, two programs that got high scores in Unix usage survey.
