RV "KRONPRINS HAAKON": GRAVITY METER <back to main page>

Back to RV "Kronprins Haakon" main GEO page

INTRODUCTION

A gravity meter measures, as it's name indicate, minute variations (ppm level) in earth's gravity field. Any movement of the instrument - like those of a vessel at sea - will mask this variation. In order to eliminate effects of a moving vessel, the sensor is mounted on a two-axes gyro stabilized platform that keeps it level at all times; in addition the vessel must keep constant course and speed during measurements; also raw data is filtered in specific ways.

The gravity meter should be installed close to center of gravity of the vessel, in order to minimize roll and pitch movements.
