ABOUT THE SURVEYS

H2DEEP - Knipovich Ridge, MCS

Department of Earth Science, Univ. of Bergen, will in the period 19-26 August, 2009 acquire multichannel seismic streamer (MCS) data on the Knipovich Ridge, west of Spitsbergen, using RV "Håkon Mosby". The aim of the survey, which is performed within the NFR H2DEEP project, is to study the interplay between magmatism and tectonism along this active spreading ridge. Gravimetric and magnetic data will also be acquired. SVALEX 2009

SVALEX-2009

Department of Earth Science, Univ. of Bergen, will during the period 27 August - 4 September, 2009 acquire multichannel seismic data in Isfjorden and Van Mijenfjorden, Spitsbergen, using RV "Håkon Mosby". The aim of the survey, which is performed within the SVALEX framework, is to study the tectonic evolution of the western part of Spitsbergen. Gravimetric and magnetic data will also be acquired. 30 students from all Norwegian universities will join the survey. SVALEX is sponsored by StatoilHydro and led by NTNU.

AIRGUN HANDLING PROCEDURES

Single airgun - deployment

  1. One person from the crew of HÅKON MOSBY is needed to handle the crane, as well as at least one trained person from GEO; a maximum of 3 persons. Before commencing the deployment of the guns, one must make sure that the trigging is switched off (GUNCO is in SAFE position), and that the gun is not filled with air under pressure. Remember to inform the bridge.
  2. The gun is deployed to ca. one meter above the sea surface. At this point the gun has to be filled with air, and lowered to the required depth.
  3. This procedure is repeated until all single guns are in the sea. When the deployment is finished, the responsible in the instrument room and the bridge must be informed.

Single airgun, recovery

  1. One person from the crew of HÅKON MOSBY is needed to handle the crane, as well as at least one trained person from GEO; a maximum of 3 persons. Before recovery, one must make sure that trigging is switched off (GUNCO is in SAFE position), and that the compressor is switched off. The bridge must be informed.
  2. Before the recovery of the gun, the air-supply must be switched off, and the air-pressure must be decreased to ca. 20 kg. The gun is recovered to ca. one meter above the sea surface. At this point the air must be removed from the gun.
  3. The gun is recovered on board the ship.
IMPORTANT: WHEN THE GUN IS TO BE LOWERED ONTO THE DECK, THE GUN MUST NEVER BE TOUCHED; USE THE ATTACHED ROPE.
When the gun is on board, recover the harness. Inform the bridge and the instrument room when the guns are on deck.

Concerning use of personal safety-equipment, it is referred to the internal safety instructions for marine seismic fieldwork (enclosed).

Airgun string - deployment

  1. One person from the crew of HÅKON MOSBY is needed to handle the crane, as well as two trained person from GEO; a maximum of 4 persons. Before starting the deployment, one must make sure that the signal-plug is not attached to the gun winch. The guns must be pressurized to approx. 20 Bar. Remember to remove the air-cable from the gun winch. Inform the bridge.
  2. During the deployment and recovery of the string, the stern-gate must be open. Therefore all persons working close to the stern must use life-jacket and be attached with a rope, in addition to use of ordinary safety-equipment.
  3. In addition to the person handling the crane, one person must handle the gun winch, and one person must work close to the stern-gate. This person attaches or removes the ropes as the string is recovered over the stern-gate. This person is in charge of the complete operation. When the string is in the sea, the brake must be put on the winch, the air cable must be attached, and the guns filled with air. The signal-plugs must be attached to the winch. When the deployment is completed, the responsible in the instrument room and the bridge must be informed.

Airgun string - recovery

  1. The same number of persons as during deployment is required. Before the recovery is commenced, the airgun trigging must be switched off, the compressor must be switched off, and the air-pressure must be reduced to approx 20 Bar. Signal plugs and air cable must be removed from the airgun winch. Inform the bridge.
  2. The same safety equipment as during deployment is required.
  3. Same procedure as during deployment.
When the string is on board, remember that the guns are under high pressure!
The responsible must make sure that the guns are emptied in a safe way. When the recovery has been completed, the responsible in the instrumentation room and the bridge must be informed.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS: STREAMER

  1. One person from the ship's crew is needed to maneuver the crane, and two persons, with the proper training, is needed from GEO. Max. 4 persons. Before starting deployment/recovery; notify the bridge.
  2. During deployment and recovery the stern port must be open. Therefore all persons who work near the rear end of the deck must wear survival suit and line, or life west and line, in addition to ordinary safety outfit, As soon as the stern port has been opened and the tail buoy has been deployed, a rope should be attached across the stern port.
  3. During deployment/recovery birds must be attached/detached to the streamer. A high level of precaution must be held by the person who is lifting the birds across the stern port. If refilling of fluid (IsoparM) in the streamer is needed, spilling on deck must be avoided, since oil on deck causes this to become very slippery. When the streamer has been deployed completely, the cable reel must be secured with its brake. When the deployment/recovery has been completed, the responsible in the instrument laboratory and the bridge must be notified.
  4. As long as the streamer is in the sea the stern port will remain open. Personal movements on the rear deck should be limited to a minimum. Persons who need to go there should always notify the instrument laboratory/bridge beforehand.

As for use of personal safety equipment/outfit, it is referred to "Internal safety instructions for marine seismic fieldwork".
